Not all. Many universities have made GRE optional post-COVID, but top programs at MIT, Stanford, Harvard, and others still recommend or require it. Always check your target program’s specific requirements. Submitting a strong GRE score even when optional can strengthen your application.

How long is a GRE score valid? +

GRE scores are valid for 5 years from the test date — longer than IELTS, TOEFL, or GMAT. This means you can take GRE in your final year of undergraduate study and use the score for graduate applications several years later.

What is a competitive GRE score? +

A total score of 310+ (Verbal + Quantitative) is generally competitive for most graduate programs. For top programs (Ivy League, MIT, Stanford), aim for 320+. For STEM programs, Quant 165+ is highly valued. For humanities, Verbal 160+ is important.

Can I cancel my GRE score? +

Yes. After completing the test, you can choose to cancel your score before seeing it (for free) or after seeing it (within 72 hours for a fee). ETS also offers ScoreSelect, which lets you choose which test scores to send — you don’t have to send all attempts.

Can I use GRE instead of GMAT for MBA? +
