Frequently Asked Questions

Is the SAT required for US university admissions? +
Many US universities went test-optional during COVID and maintained that policy. However, several elite universities (MIT, Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth) have reinstated SAT/ACT requirements. Even at test-optional schools, a strong SAT score (1400+) can significantly strengthen your application, especially if your GPA is in a competitive range.
What is the difference between SAT and ACT? +
SAT and ACT are both accepted by all US universities. The SAT has 2 sections (Math + Reading/Writing), while ACT has 4 (English, Math, Reading, Science). ACT includes a Science section and tends to be more straightforward but faster-paced. SAT Math allows a calculator for all questions. Both tests are equivalent in weight for admissions. Take a practice test for each to see which suits you better.
What is Superscore for SAT? +
Many US colleges use “Superscore” — they take your best Math score and best Reading/Writing score from different SAT test dates to create your highest composite score. For example, if you scored 750 Math on one attempt and 780 Reading/Writing on another, many schools will consider your superscore as 1530. Always check if your target school accepts Superscore.
Is the Digital SAT harder than the old paper SAT? +
The Digital SAT is generally considered similar in difficulty to the paper version, but the format is very different. It’s shorter (2h 14min vs 3h), has shorter passages, and is adaptive. Many students find it more manageable because of the shorter passages and built-in Desmos calculator. However, the adaptive format means getting questions wrong early can limit your score ceiling.
Can I take the SAT in India? +
Yes. The SAT is offered in India at authorized test centres in major cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, and Kolkata. Tests are offered approximately 7 times per year. Register at collegeboard.org. The test fee for international students is USD 68 (approximately ₹5,700).
